Banana Bread Battles!

With a proverbial smack of an oven mitt, the idea for the first cooking duel, and this blog were born.

The first challenge: Who can make the best banana bread.

We hurried to the downstairs Publix to gather special ingredients for our first battle. (Thankfully there is a Publix on the ground floor of my building!)

Kristina’s Special Ingredients

  • Chocolate Chips
  • Espresso
  • Cayenne Pepper

Jenni’s Special Ingredients

  • Chocolate Chips
  • French Vanilla Hot Chocolate mix

Deciding on a base recipe, we set off into opposing corners of my kitchen and started furiously cooking.

Base Recipie

Banana Bread Recipe:

  • 1 3/4 cups (230 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (150 grams) granulated white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled
  • 3 ripe large bananas
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • (thank you

After combining the ingredients, setting the topping, and trying to figure out my oven, we placed the banana bread creations in at 350 and waited.

45 minutes passed, and while the tops of the bread appeared to be done, the insides were still mushy. This is also the time of the first battle wound of the night. I burned my hand on the top of the inside of the oven. Warning: Those things are hot.

Another 10 minutes and the breads were perfect!

The taste test:

Kristina: “eh”

Jenni: Mine is better, end of story.

(Top bread is the French Vanilla Banana Bread. Bottom is the Espresso Cayenne Pepper one)

So, in this round of battles, I win.

Kristina is now angry and will stomp off into the night like the hulk.

Word to the wise: Please be careful with Cayenne Pepper…Kristina’s cake was quite spicy!!
